1997 Springer, frame & forks up rebuild, "the Springer "

originalspringerI kept this '97 Heritage Springer Special bone stock for the first 3 years I had it. It was a great bike, rode it all over, all the time, it became my favorite. But alas after about 35000 miles, it was done, worn out. The mill and tranny both needed complete rebuid and there were other problems with the frame and front end as well. It was time to rebuild and I wanted to bring up to date with my own tastes. I wasnt sure what I would do till I stripped it. Once it was bare It was determined that the frame was OK, it was the swing arm that was tweeked. The springer had a broken inner spring and the front leg was tweeked, so it could be rebuilt. Thats what I started with, bare frame and springer fork.

Looking around the shop, gathered 1 1/4" 18" apehangers, Late FLT rear fender, chrome swing arm for 2004 Softail, 6 speed Ultima transmission, a stretched 5 gallon fat bob tank and a pair of kingspoke wheels with matched whitewall Metzler tires - 21 x 3 front and 200 16 x 5 on rear. I tried a couple of different front fenders. After a month or so to ruminate on the look, I started refining the design a bit.

No fender really did it for me until I went with the 23" front wheel and fabbed 2 touring rear fenders together. Sprung solo seat is next with late cats eye dash. Time to start on a mill. I started out with Ultima 4 1/4" bore twin cam cases with replacement 4" stroke crank assy. For the top end I scored a new 4" bore cylinder and bare 110 CVO Screamin Eagle head set. Now I am starting to envision the old Heritage springer coming back on steroids.

Finally found a fender to suit, it will be altered a little but it will be perfect. I have a set of early style plastic Buco Saddlebags and we'll run long dual fishtail pipes, matched with the color scheme and fringe reminiscent of the original Heritage Springer Special. I have the motor on the bench now and I'm starting with installing Ultima Hi flo oil pump and Billet cam support plate with Andrews 64G .640 lift cams and S&S inner and outer gear kit. Next I dropped in 4 Jims Hydro Solid lifters. SE 110 heads are bare and I just ordered 2.08 Intakes and 1.635 Exhaust valves. I have a set of Hi lift beehive springs and collars ready to go so Ill update this when next weeks parts come in.
